Simona Mihai - Soprano

Simona Mihai was awarded a Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother Scholarship supported by Jill and Joseph Karaviotis to study at the Royal College of Music with Kathleen Livingstone. Currently a member of the Benjamin Britten International Opera School/RCM, she made a highly successful debut as the Governess in Britten¹s the Turn of the Screw under the direction of John Copley.

Simona made her operatic debut as Celia (Mozart Lucio Silla) under the direction of Brigitte Fasbender, touring with the European Opera Centre in the Royal Opera House, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Scotland, Ireland, and Royal Danish Opera House, Copenhagen. Other roles include La Cesca (Puccini Gianni Schicchi) and Cis (Britten Albert Herring) with Sir Thomas Allen directing at the BBIOS/RCM.

Concert and recital appearances have taken Simona all over the world from
Romania, Croatia, and Hungary to Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Greece and
Spain. In May 2001, she made her debut at the Wigmore Hall, and in December
2001 she won the First Prize at the National Mozart Competition. She was a
soloist in Schumann Das Paradies und die Peri, collaborating with the Royal
Liverpool Philharmonic directed by Gerard Schwartz and in April 2002 was
invited to perform as a soloist Mozart Vespers and Beethoven Mass in C with
the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Simona received a full scholarship at the Benjamin Britten International
Opera School, RCM, for 2003-2005 and has recently won the Miriam Licette
Scholarship, the Clonter Inter-Collegiate Opera Prize and the Joaninha
Award. She is also supported by the Ratiu Foundation,The Leche Trust,
Concordia Barthel Award for 2004 and Musicians Benevolent Fund Education
Award 2003.
