Annie Vavrille

Mezzo Soprano

Annie Vavrille was born in France, and studied at both the Conservatoire and the University in Lyon. She later went on to study with Ileana Cotrubas in Vienna and with Galina Vichevskaya in Paris.

She sang first for Opéra de Lyon in Madama Butterfly (conducted by Kent Nagano) in a production which also came to Birmingham City Hall. In 1996 she made her début at the Fenice in Venice, in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges. She was invited back to sing Mercédès in Carmen, a role which she also sang for Welsh National Opera in 1997. She sang the title role of Carmen in Austria, while for Wexford Festival Opera she sang the Princess in Dargomizhsky’s Rusalka to great critical acclaim. In France she appeared in Bloch’s Macbeth at the Montpellier Festival; in Hersant’s Le Chateau des Carpathes in Nancy and Caen; and in Les Contes d’Hoffmann also for Opéra de Nancy.

She appears frequently on the concert platform, particularly in 20th Century chamber music. She has already sung in several European cities, including Cervo, Genoa, Glasgow, Lyon, Milan, Stockholm and Strasbourg,
