James Rutherford read Theology at Durham University before commencing studies at the Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio in London. James has been a Kathleen Ferrier Award prizewinner and a BBC New Generation Artist.
Operatic engagements include Figaro Le Nozze di Figaro for Opera National de Paris, Welsh National Opera, Opera North and Glyndebourne Touring Opera; Donner Das Rheingold for Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Royal Opera House; Argante Rinaldo Deutsche Staatsoper, Berlin and at the Montpellier and Innsbruck Festivals (also recorded by Harmonia Mundi); Jochanaan Salome in Montpellier; Kothner Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg at the Royal Opera House and major roles with English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, English Touring Opera and British Youth Opera.
In concert James has appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra as Swallow Peter Grimes in London and New York with Sir Colin Davis (recorded by LSO Live), Herald Lohengrin with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Donald Runnicles at the Edinburgh International Festival, Gobrias Belshazzar with the Berlin Philharmonic, Sea Symphony in Stuttgart and Cologne with Sir Roger Norrington, Messiah with the Maggio Musicale, Florence and Ivor Bolton, Songs and Dances of Death in Pamplona with Rumon Gamba and Donner Das Rheingold at the BBC Proms with Sir Simon Rattle. Performances with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, the Symphony Hall, Birmingham and at the Three Choirs Festival; with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Halle, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academy of Ancient Music, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony, Bournemouth Symphony and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
A noted recitalist James is a frequent broadcaster on BBC Radio 3 and given recitals at the Wigmore Hall, the Wallace Collection and St. John’s Smith Square, London, the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, the Royal Dublin Society and at the Bath, Buxton, Chester and Isle of Man International Festivals. Recently James has performed Schubert’s Winterreise with Eugene Asti for Welsh National Opera, the Buxton Festival and St. George’s Brandon Hill, Bristol.
