Susan Atherton - Mezzo Soprano

Born in London , she was a choral scholar at Trinity College , Cambridge where she gained her degree in History of Art. On graduating, she studied on The Knack, ENO’s part-time opera and music theatre course. She later continued her studies at the RAM and the RSAMD where she took part in master classes with Robert Tear, Malcolm Martineau and David Wilson-Johnson. In 2004, she took part in the Samling Foundation master class with Sir Thomas Allen, Patricia MacMahon and Paul Farrington, with whom she continues to study.

Her operatic roles include Ruggiero/Alcina (RSAMD), Dorabella/Cosi fan Tutte, L’Enfant/Tasse Chinoise/L’Enfant et les Sortileges, Ernestina/L’Equivoco Stravagante (cover for Garsington Opera), Tisbe/La Cenerentola (cover for Glyndebourne on Tour) and Melanto/Amor/Ulysses Comes Home for Birmingham Opera Company. Her oratorio repertoire includes Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Bach’s B Minor Mass, Weihnachts Oratorio, Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, Ode to the Birthday of Queen Anne, Belshazzar, Mozart’s Requiem, Coronation Mass, Durufle’s Requiem, Elgar’s The Music Makers and Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody. She was recently a soloist in Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with the CBSO under the direction of Sakari Oramo. In summer 2005 she performed 1 st Tourist in Jonathan Dove’s Greed for the Glyndebourne Jerwood Development scheme.
