Wendy
Dawn Thompson - Mezzo Soprano
Born
in New Zealand, Wendy is currently in her second year of the Advanced
Opera studies at the Benjamin Britten International Opera School
at the Royal College of Music, studying with Margaret Kingsley.
During the last year she has won the Kathleen Ferrier Competition,
the vocal section of the Royal Over-Seas League Competition and
been selected for representation by YCAT.
Her
previous operatic work has included the roles of Hermia (A Midsummer
Night¹s Dream) for British Youth Opera, Der Komponist (Ariadne
auf Naxos) for Aldeburgh Productions, Irene (Handel’s Tamerlano)
and the Governess (Queen of Spades) at the RNCM, the title role
in Handel’s Agrippina, Mrs Grose (Turn of the Screw), Florence
Pike (Albert Herring) and 2nd Lady (Magic Flute) for BBIOS and Olga
(Eugene Onegin) for Opera Garden.
In
2002 Wendy appeared in the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus and performed
Handel¹s Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall conducted by Sir
David Willcocks. Other concert appearances have included Mahler
Lieder eines fahrenden gesellen with the Liverpool Youth
Orchestra and recitals at Bridgewater Hall, Belfast Festival (broadcast
by BBC Radio 3) and the Aldeburgh Festival
This
year she will make her debut at the Edinburgh International Festival
and will perform recitals throughout the United Kingdom, culminating
in her Wigmore Hall recital debut in November. Her future operatic
engagements include the roles of Dorabella (Cosi fan tutti) for
both Garsington Opera and Opera Australia and Minerva (Il Ritorno
d’Ulisse in Patria) for Birmingham Opera Company, produced
by Graham Vick.
