Carl von Weiler

With the Samling Foundation: As one of the selected artists for the 'Arenas 2003' projects in Newcastle upon Tyne, my contact with the Samling Foundation is recent. A relationship is being forged during the development of a public art project which necessarily involves good communication between 'Samling', Baltic and the Arenas in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Samling Foundation, looking as it does at the roots of the creative process, is an organisation who are clear and direct to deal with. This importantly opens the channels necessary in forging better relationships between artist, respective funding bodies and the public at large.

Past Achievements: On graduating from art school in 1988 von Weiler was selected to represent Britain in 'Germinations V touring exhibition, for young European artists. In 1996 von Weiler came to public and critical acclaim with a work named 'NEST'. This work confirmed an artist able to work with 'off-site' locations such as derelict warehouses and landscapes, alongside the spaces offered by galleries and museums. This diverse nature was furthermore expressed in the use of different mediums notably video, sound, drawing and installation.
The works 'Horizontal Hold' 1995 and 'Matrix' 1998 co-joined video with installation marking new video environments. He was selected for the Paul Hamlyn Awards in 2000 and exhibition (solo) in that same year at Matt's Gallery, London.
Consistently during the last eight years the artist has been working on outdoor projects, exhibiting a work named 'Court' in the Jesus College, Cambridge biannual exhibition in 2001. Works have been shown across the British Isles, Europe and Mexico. His video works were selected for a British Council touring exhibition, 'Black Box Recorder' (contemporary artists using video), taking the works to East and West Europe, North Africa, the Far East, Russia and South America.

Current Activities: Selected videos are still touring with the British Council, 'Black Box Recorder' exhibition until Spring 2003. Having spent last winter 2001-2002 in Rome, Italy, the artist is again working from his studio in London. He is collaborating with galleries in Europe, especially 'Consortium Gallery', Amsterdam, on further projects for 2003, and will be showing in April/May 2003 at the Museum of Installation, London. His work 'NEST' will be featured in the forthcoming 'Installation Art' book published by Thames and Hudson. He currently teaches at the Slade School of Art, London.
