Hazel Angus
Born and educated in Newcastle, as a child Hazel Angus’s particular interests were art, poetry, ballet and visiting her grandfather’s secluded Northumbrian cottage (the scene of her childhoold paintings).
She was later employed in a commercial art studio, studying at the then College of Art and Industrial Design.
A teaching career followed, then a fine art course at Newcastle College. In her last year she was required to select a group of four words as the subject of her final piece of work and she found herself irresistibly drawn to “Memories, Metaphors, Dreams and Realities”.
These words triggered deep memories of her childhood and she suddenly saw very clearly not only what her final piece for College would be but also that it would form the first of the series of imaginative autobiographical childhood paintings she would feel compelled to produce.
Working mainly as a portrait painter, she has in recent years begun a series of ballet and life studies, and she is also currently producing romantic mixed-media paintings inspired by pre-20 th century poetry, as well as undertaking numerous commissions and exhibiting widely.
