Mark Chaundy - tenor

Mark sang in the Choir of St.David’s Cathedral, Cardiff whilst studying piano and organ, before gaining a choral scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford. In 1999 he became a student at the RCM supported by The Countess of Munster and The Arts Council of Wales studying with Neil Mackie and Ryland Davies. He now works regularly with Joy Mammen. In October 2005 he was announced as one of the first recipients of the first Susan Chilcott Scholarship.

Recital highlights include a recital with Iain Burnside, a Britten programme with Roger Vignoles, working with Ned Rorem on a performance of his songs at Tanglewood, and a NFMS winners’ recital at the Wigmore Hall. In 2002 Mark joined the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus later performing First Trojan Man Idomeneo and Giuseppe La Traviata for Glyndebourne on Tour. He has twice been a finalist in the Young Welsh Singers Competition and has won a National Federation of Music Societies Award.

Mark was recently an Associate Artist with Welsh National Opera and has under studied Lenski Eugene Onegin , Kudrjas Katya Kabanova, Duke Rigoletto. He sang Roderigo, Otello in the WNO Millennium opening gala conducted by Carlo Rizzi. Last summer he took part in masterclasses with Dennis O’Neill in Italy. Recent perfomances include Haydn The Seasons, Janacek Otcenas, Handel Samson, Rossini Stabat Mater and Petite Messe, Kodaly Psalmus Hungaricus, Tippett The Tempest Suite, Bajazet Handel Tamerlano Cambridge Handel Opera Group, a St.David’s Hall recital, a tour of recitals for Scottish Opera, Brubeck’s ‘La Fiesta de la Posada’ at the Barbican and Mozart’s ‘Jewel Box’ Bampton Classical Opera. He looks forward to further recitals with Iain Burnside and Rebecca Evans, ‘Messiah’ concerts with the CBSO, a Samling Foundation Masterclass with Sir Thomas Allen and cover Kudjrash Katya Kabanova for Opera North. He lives in Stoke Newington with several friends, a few goldfish and a rather old piano.
