van de Woerd - Baritone
Mattijs
van de Woerd studied with Sylvia Schlüter and Maarten Koningsberger
at the Rotterdam Conservatory, and with Margreet Honig at the Conservatory
of Amsterdam. He took part in masterclasses given by Barbara Bonney,
Sir Thomas Allen, Carolyn Watkinson, Patricia MacMahon, Graham Clark,
Dale Duesing, Udo Reinemann, Hartmut Höll, Rudolf Jansen, Roger
Vignoles and Graham Johnson. In March 2001 he won the Vriendenkrans
and Concertgebouw prizes, awarded by the Friends of the Concertgebouw
and Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Concertgebouw respectively.
In June 2001 he graduated with distinction from De Nieuwe Opera
Academie, the opera programme of the Amsterdam and The Hague Conservatories.
As a soloist, Mattijs van de Woerd took part in oratorio concerts
performing works by composers such as Handel (Saul, Dettingen Te
Deum, Utrecht Te Deum), Bach (St. Matthew's Passion, St. John's
Passion), J. Haydn (Paukenmesse, The Creation), Fauré (Requiem)
and Brahms (German Requiem). He performed in opera's by Mozart (Don
Giovanni in Don Giovanni, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte,
both conducted by Kenneth Montgomery), Purcell (Aeneas in Dido and
Aeneas), Britten (Sid in Albert Herring conducted by Paul McCreesh,
the Traveller in Curlew River), Menotti (Mr. Gobineau in The Medium),
Weill (der Lehrer in Der Jasager) and Poulenc (le Gendarme in Les
Mamelles de Tirésias conducted by Ed Spanjaard).
Furthermore, Mattijs appeared in numerous song recitals, interpreting
a wide variety of repertoire (including performances of Schubert's
Die schöne Müllerin). He also participated in radio broadcasts
and CD recordings of compositions by a.o. Carissimi (Jephte conducted
by Jos van Veldhoven), Liszt (Christus conducted by Peter Eötvös),
Hindemith and Rzewski.
In
September 2003, Mattijs won first prize in the Wigmore Hall International
Song Competition 2003. In March 2004, he will take part
in a recital programme at the Concertgebouw, sharing the stage with
Dorothea Röschmann and Graham Johnson.
