John
MacKenzie - Baritone
John
was born in Dumbarton. He studied with Alan Watt at the RSAMD, where
he gained a B.A. (musical studies) and the M. Mus. in Advanced Opera
with distinction. In 1999 he won the Mary Garden International Prize
at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival.
He attended the Ravinia Festival, Illinois where he studied recital
repertoire with Sir Thomas Allen, Dawn Upshaw, Benita Valente and
Martin Katz. Recent concert performances include Mendelssohn’s
Die Erste Walpurgisnacht with the SCO a recital in Glamis Castle
and a tour of Scotland and Gala performances in Bermuda with Essential
Scottish Opera.
On the Opera Stage John has played Guglielmo in Mozart’s Cosi
fan Tutte and the title role in Don Giovanni at the Aberdeen International
Youth Festival, Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucretia by Britten, Nick
Shadow from Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, the title
role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Giove in Cavalli’s
La Calisto and Lescaut in Massenet’s Manon at the RSAMD.
