The concert followed three days of workshops and rehearsals in the participating schools which were all about building and developing unforgettable experiences in arts and music for children and students across the age range, raising aspirations and nurturing talent.

When they meet in years to come, they will say 'do you remember the night we performed at The Sage Gateshead?'"

" It's been fantastic for the children to experience something at such a professional level. It will certainly raise the standard in their music practice. Our thanks go to The Samling Foundation because without them we wouldn't have been able to do a project like this."

'The Samling Foundation came up trumps again! It was a truly marvellous experience for our pupils to work with young musicians of such calibre. Their involvements was first class and their attitude to working with our young people inspirational! I was delighted at the range of opportunity you were able to offer from the singing workshops to the dance and choreography and the mask making'
Ali Barden - Head Teacher, Corbridge Church of England First School
'The work the Foundation has initiated and advanced with Southbank Sinfonia has been unique in my experience and of the highest standard. The relationship built over the past 2 years has flourished. As a school we have enjoyed the collaboration immensely. Pupils have had the opportunity to work alongside vibrant and talented individuals, see them work together as a group, stand as excellent role models, and motivate and inspire other young people...The children also benefitted from working with the young artist Lucy Hudson and Artist Amanda Whall. This cross arts collaboration was very positive and successful...The final concert brought the Arts together in a performance that was a sheer celebration of talent, energy and enthusiasm. To see children and young people from 8-18 from our schools sharing the experience was fantastic.'

5-15th February 2004
Following on from the hugely successful house-City in Newcastle's Grainger Street, Wolfgang Weileder has taken house-City to Madrid. Three stories high, house-Madrid was constructed between the 5th and the 15th of February 2004 in the middle of Paseo de Recoletos next to Plaza de Colón. Two groups of builders simultaneously constructed and de-constructed two identical shells during the ten days. The 7.5m high shells were built out of lightweight blocks up to third floor level and juxtaposed with each other in rotational symmetry. The process was synchronized so that the construction and de-construction was choreographed sequentially: The opposite segments of the two shells slowly moved around each other until house-Madrid was completed. Two separate houses appeared on the same spot at the same time.
house-Madrid was part of the international public art festival MADRID ABIERTO 2004, Madrid, Spain, and a further development of house-City, an arena project initiated and managed by the Samling Foundation.

house-city by Wolfgang Weileder (part of the arena project)
Over four days and nights around the clock bricklayers simultaneously built and dismantled two houses at the foot of Grey’s Monument in Newcastle’s city centre. Time-lapse photography recorded the process, showing the building in a way that it never existed on the ground.
Wolfgang chose Grainger Street because it offered him ‘ the most spectacular showcase of Georgian architecture in England’ and the best possible backdrop to
to his project which he hoped would ‘open people’s minds to new ways of thinking about the city, its buildings and the environment.’
A webcam set up on neighbouring buildings captured the whole process with over 5000 visits to the website in the first 24 hours.
house-city was the first of five major public art commissions to reach fruition as part of the arena project, led by the internationally acclaimed sculptor Antony Gormley. Central to the project is the involvement of 60 of Tyne and Wear’s most gifted post 16 students and their teachers, who are working alongside the five artists on their commissions. The project, which was initiated and managed by the Samling Foundation in partnership with BALTIC, The Centre of Contemporary Art reaches its climax in October when the other four commissions will be completed and in the public domain.
