1962, born Sunderland, County Durham, England

1966- 81, early education in Sunderland.

1981- 82, foundation year at Sunderland Art College, sculpture and figure drawing, worked under Liz Tate, Roy Chapman, Peter Smith, and Ian Spencer.

1982- 86, Fine Art at Newcastle University, early sculpture; around 1984 began move to painting, final deree in painting.Tutors included Pip Warwick, William Varley, Norman Adams, Eric Dobson.

Awards: 1983 - J.W. Brown Drawing Prize, 1985 - John Bell Simpson Painting Prize, 1986 - Anabella Winship Smiles Travelling Scholarship.

1985-86 - final year at college documented by Channel 4.

1986- 89, studio in Bristol - began exhibiting upon leaving college with the Anne Berthoud Gallery, London.

Three solos between then and 1988 with Anne Berthoud were followed by the first important public exhibition in 1990, 'On the threshold of Meaning' ; shared with a contemporary, Nicholas Jolly, at the Plymouth City Art Gallery, curated by Sarah Shalgosky..

1989- studio near Newcastle Upon Tyne, in the North of England

The Plymouth show played a large part in establishing the reputations of both artists.They would show together again a year later, in a larger mixed group show, ''A View of the New ', held at The Royal Overseas League, London.

First solo in native North-East of England came in 1991 at the Newcastle Polytechnic Gallery (now The University Gallery, University of Northumbria), directed by Mara-Helen Wood.

Representation by the Nicholas Treadwell Gallery during the mid 90's included Atkinson's work in group exhibitions at several European galleries, and at many of the world's leading Art Fairs.

In 1997 an important semi-retrospective exhibition at the University Gallery , led to the gallery's publication ' When the Maggot Bites ', with an introduction by William Varley.

Solo exhibitions and involvement in frequent group exhibitions , nationally and internationally have continued to date, and Atkinson's paintings and drawings are held in public and private collections worldwide.
