Born in Yorkshire, Hilary has lived in Northumberland for over thirty
years. She originally trained in fashion design at St Martins School
of Art, London and Northumbria University. After a successful career
as a fashion designer, she lectured at Northumbria University and
became a member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers.
Her
interest in the human form led her to pursue a degree in Fine Art
at Newcastle University where she specialised in painting. Her degree
show provided the impetus for a style which has become distinctive
in its innovative handling of mixed media. Continuing exploration
of surface alongside colour reflects her underlying interest in
a sculptural depiction of the human form.
She
has exhibited widely both in the UK and abroad and has been awarded
several public commissions. Her work is to be found in both public
and private collections in Britain, America and Japan.
Statement
“
I paint people and my main interest is in how they interact with
each other and the surrounding area. My work is continually concerned
with the passing of time and the ebb and flow of communication.
Therefore, the gaps of stillness and silence which intersperse movement
and sound are as vital to the composition as the subject matter
itself.
I
use a wide range of sizes and media including paint and pastel on
paper and collage. My interest in different textures and surfaces
is reflected in the materials I use which have included reinforced
mud and chiselled plaster”
