Jonathan was born in Newcastle in 1960, where his father Tony was a founding member of the Northern Sinfonia, and educated at the Royal Grammar School.  He took a French and Philosophy degree at New College Oxford, and despite acting in thirteen shows during his time there, graduated with honours in 192.  He then trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, leaving in May 95 to appear at Leeds Playhouse in his first professional role.

Since then, Jonathan has worked extensively in theatres around England and played leading roles for the RSC, at The National Theatre and in the West End in London.  In 1996, he married Susannah Waters, and they were delighted to appear together at Dovenest in Samling Foundation programmes of readings and song on two occasions.

Recently, Jonathan has begun working as a director and as a teacher at the Guildhall School, RADA, the American Conservatory Theatre School in San Francisco and the British American Drama Academy in London.

Jonathan's next engagement is at the Chichester Festival Theatre for the summer season, from April until October 2003, acting in plays by Anton Chekhov and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing.
