Masterclass Programme

Since 1996 the Foundation's focus on excellence and providing the right environment for creativity through investing in young artists has earned widespread respect. NESTA (The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) acknowledged the Samling Foundation's Masterclass Programme in Music as exemplary.

Working together with the principal music colleges in the country through a recommendation and audition process in Glasgow and London, the Foundation selects young singers, usually in the final stages of their studies or the early stages of their careers, to take part in week-long programmes of study.

They are invited to spend a week in the Lake District where they are coached intensively in opera and lieder singing by some of the world's greatest artists. Past masters have included the Foundation's Patron, Sir Thomas Allen, Barbara Bonney, Isobel Buchanan, Ileana Cotrubas, Della Jones, Malcolm Martineau, Felicity Palmer, and Sarah Walker

Beneficiaries of this programme have included Sally Matthews, Lisa Milne, Lucy Crowe, Jonathan Lemalu, Mattijs van de Woerd and James Rutherford amongst many other emerging artists. The chosen young singers are expected only to pay for their travel to the Lake District. All other costs associated with the masterclasses are covered by the Foundation. To do this, The Foundation is constantly looking for funding opportunities.

As with everything the Foundation undertakes it looks for ways in which the benefits of the core activity can be shared with the wider community. During the Masterclass weeks, the Foundation opens its doors to school-children through an education programme and the general public who are invited to observe the masters and their students at work. The climax of the week is a Gala Concert, given on the Saturday evening. Here the emerging and established artists give solo and ensemble performances to audiences, who are never disappointed. The standard is exceptional.

Since 2003 the Foundation has been running, as part of each Masterclass Week, vocal workshops led by Paul Farrington and Simon Over. Working on repertoire from  music theatre and  classical traditions, The Foundation has offered coaching and technical support for music students and their teachers culminating in a performance of the music studied.

Comments from Past Participants

"The masterclass was not only inspiring and educational but also a great deal of fun. Pat, Della and Paul were the ideal mix of enthusiasm, passion and insight. The support of Caroline and Simon was greatly appreciated and the words of Richard and Barbara were possibly the most beautiful melody of all.

"The opportunity to work so intensely and improve on so many facets of the singer's art has left me far more confident and capable as I move into the profession." - James Harrison

"Never before have I felt so comfortable and supported in a learning environment. It was so special to experience the changes in ourselves with such a group of honest, open and lovely folk. The atmosphere really enabled me to get the best from all the incredible tools, which were on offer from the leaders.

" ……this unique experience has planted some very important seeds which I know will continue to grow, develop and transfer into my long term career as a performer" - Nicky Spence

"I just wanted to thank you for all the encouragement and guidance at Samling. It was exactly what I needed to pick myself up and feel inspired." - Celeste Lazarenko

‘In all the years I have been training at music colleges I have never experienced any thing like the Samling week. Happy memories indeed.’ - Katherine Manley

'The Samling Foundation is quite astounding and is doing so much for not only young artists but for the future music makers of our country by introducing so many projects to so many young people.' Della Jones - Leader

"I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to experience a Samling week. It is, to my knowledge, a unique working environment, and one which allows a depth and intensity of exploration that is rarely available to us - indeed to anyone; on top of this - the dynamic of our group seemed to be one which encouraged a great deal of trust between us in terms of exploration and emotional freedom which was very special. All in all it is a week I shall always remember, and I aim to grow and develop from the work we did in that time."

Amy Freston - Samling Scholar

"To help young singers take that leap of faith is the most exhilarating experience. It has been a personal privilege to meet all the singers over the years. All say that the Samling Masterclasses were a life-changing experience on the journey to becoming, we all hope, the next generation of great singers."
Paul Farrington, Voice Coach

"A wonderful week… extremely useful…. such intense work with amazing teachers and delightful surroundings! A privilege."
Anouschka Lara - Samling Scholar

"A very special ambience and happy atmosphere. The group was a good combination of rationality and honesty which made them generous to each other and able to take criticism without any problem. I thought the standard of the concert was remarkable"
Patricia MacMahon - Leader

"Thank you for a wonderful week. I was very sad it had to finish."
Helen Withers - Samling Scholar

"Thank you for your impeccable, tireless and amazingly cheerful organisation of the week, for inviting me to do it and for your concern for us all"
Caroline Dowdle - Pianist

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the experience of a lifetime."
Henriikka Grondahl - Samling Scholar

"What a treat it was to take part in the masterclass. It was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it….. A very pleasant alternative to other forms of masterclasses and I hope you will be able to keep up this unique tradition in the future."
Lise Christensen - Samling Scholar

"By talking to Felicity, I learned from her humbleness that the journey never ends! It is very much a matter of keeping up the work, the search for improvement, and the belief in yourself even when it goes slowly… I am very grateful for my week in the Lake District."
Lisa Carlioth - Samling Scholar

"It was so refreshing to hear someone of her standing demystifying the technique of singing"
Louise Innes - Samling Scholar

"There is nothing quite like this in the world!"
Sir Thomas Allen - Leader
