Journal 16/09/04: Hexham Abbey Festival

One of the region's oldest festivals gets underway tonight with the emphasis firmly on youth.

Children from three schools will join professional musicians in the opening concert of the 52nd annual Hexham Abbey Festival.

Rehearsals took place yesterday with children from St Joseph's Middle School, Hexham, joining members of the London-based Southbank Sinfonia and soprano Fiona Duncan in an intensive music workshop.

Pupils at Sele First School and Queen Elizabeth High School, both in Hexham, have also been involved in preparations for the Samling Foundation Concert which takes place tonight in Hexham Abbey.

The Samling Foundation is a Hexham-based arts and music charity dedicated to working with the cream of young performers from around the world and across the region.

At least 16 Tynedale schools are involved in this year's festival which features a wide range of music. A festival of outdoor street theatre runs until September 25.
